The Ebonies: Uganda’s Pioneering Drama Ensemble

The Ebonies is among Uganda’s most successful and enduring drama groups, having captivated audiences with their theatrical performances for nearly five decades. Founded in 1977, the group has significantly contributed to the development of Uganda’s entertainment industry, producing stage plays, television dramas, and music that profoundly reflect Ugandan culture and society.

The event held at the Serena Hotel was a momentous occasion as Maama Nnaabagereka Sylvia Nagginda and Princess Katrina Sarah Ssangalyambogo graced the celebrations dedicated to the distinguished 47th anniversary of The Ebonies, a celebrated theater group.

During the ceremony, Nnaabagereka honored Owek. J.W. Katende with an award, recognizing his outstanding leadership and unwavering commitment that have been instrumental in propelling The Ebonies for nearly half a century. She extolled his visionary efforts and thanked his wife, Margaret Katende, who she aptly described as a steadfast support system vital to Owek. Katende’s success.

Maama Nnaabagereka went on to commend The Ebonies for their exceptional dedication to preserving Uganda’s cultural heritage, with a particular emphasis on the traditions of Buganda.

She lauded their knack for utilizing theater as an educational tool, delivering powerful messages through a plethora of productions over the years. Her speech was filled with appreciation for the multitude of individuals who have contributed to The Ebonies’ incredible journey, as well as those who gathered to witness the play at the Serena Hotel.

She portrayed the performance as a unique platform to bridge generational gaps, uniting those who have been woven into the fabric of the group’s storied legacy with younger audiences eager to learn from these seasoned artists. Further, she urged government bodies, organizations, and individuals to extend their support toward performing arts and talent advancement, underscoring its significance in fostering cultural heritage and crafting robust nations on a global scale.
